An Interpretative Dialogue with Okere on “Egbe bere Ugo bere"
Anthony Chinaemerem Ajah
Abstract
In the
Introduction, Okere highlighted how globalization implied a creeping, enormous, successful
marginalization of other cultures by the West; and how it means hegemony of power and value which
threaten pluralism, freedom, variety, and alternative contributions from other worldviews and cultures.
The consequence of the process on Africa is prolongation of suffering and delay of moral development.
Compared to what obtains in the west, the peace in Africa is “a peace based on justice, straight dealing
and mutual understanding rather than one imposed by force of arms” (p.34). Prior to and while
colonialism lasted, Africa had “a peace that eluded Europe”. Hence, whatever violence that can be
noticed in postcolonial Africa “is alien to it”; “It is the result of an alien, imported and imposed ethic”
completely different from Africa’s indigenous ethic.
